Week 8: Done!

And so it ends!  The "Skinny for Kitties" challenge has come to a close.  That means it's time for me to put the diet aside (only for the moment) and focus on collecting donations!
.
Here are the final totals:

The Weekly Update:
Current $/lbs = $55
Current Weight = 137.2
Total Weight Lost = 15.8 lbs.
Total Money Raised = $869!
 .
See?  Puck is using his kittypnosis-eyes to convince you to donate.  "Yes, yes," you find yourself saying.  "I must... donate... soon... and I... must deliver... catnip.......to the handsome... Puck......"

For this final blog post, I'll talk a little about my final week, then I'll give instruction on how to donate to the "Skinny for Kitties" cause.

So, for this last week (for better or worse) I got the flu.  Not the stomach flu, mind you... but the true-blue respiratory influenza.  Exactly a week after getting the flu shot, too.  (Note: Dr reports that you can't get the flu from the flu shot.  So, don't let my tale of woe stop you from getting one.  I just happened to get very, very unlucky.)  To the right, you can see my sick-person cave.  I've camped out on the couch, as my husband is in the middle of a show and CANNOT get sick.
 .

It's actually a lot more comfy than it looks!  And besides, I have everything I need to relax and get better:  My xBox, my Kindle, my medications, and... of course... a foot-warmer.  Can you see it there, in the picture above?  No?  How about a closer look, under the covers.
.
That's Rags, my personal foot-warmer and blanket explorer.  I think he likes that I have a fever.  I'm nice and toasty.

Well, on to business!
 .
This blog was started with the intention of raising money for the HELP Humane Society.  Today, that becomes a reality!  According to pledge-amounts (both documented and word-of-mouth), we've raised around $900 for the shelter.  So how do you donate?  It's simple!
.
1.)  First, figure out how much you're donating!  Whatever your pledge amount ($1, $2, etc.), multiply this number by 15.8 (The amount of weight I lost during the pledge period).  If you want to round up to an even dollar amount... or the closest $20 increment, I certainly won't stop you.  ;-)
.
2.)  Second, send off the donation!  There are two options for payment:
a.)  Instant online payment through PayPal.
b.)  Mail checks directly to HELP Humane.
.
If you choose the Paypal option, please write in the "PURPOSE" section (at the top of the webpage) that you are donating on behalf of the "Skinny for Kitties" pledge drive.  Also, you'll want to fill in the donation amount and click "Update" before filling in your info below.  Click HERE to be taken directly to the HELP Humane Society's PayPal donation page.  You do NOT have to make an account if you don't want to.  You can simply fill in your credit card and billing info.  (Note:  PayPal is extremely safe for online transactions, if you've never used it.)
.
If you choose to snail-mail your donation, I ask that you get these into the mail by Monday or Tuesday of this coming week.  It's imperative that these checks get to the shelter soon, so they can be processed, deposited, and matched (a second shelter is matching all donations this month, including ours!).
.

Checks should be made out to:  "HELP Humane Society"
Checks should be mailed to:  HELP Humane Society, 511 Main Street, Belton MO, 64012
 .

If you have any questions, comments or digital high-fives.... don't hesitate to contact me via my blog email:  skinnyforkitties@gmail.com.  And... don't worry.  I'll be posting "Before & After" pictures as soon as I'm healthy enough to stand and pose in front of the camera.

One last, huge thanks to all my readers and pledgers for your generosity and support!
This would have been impossible without you.

  The Weekly Update:
Current $/lbs = $55
Current Weight = 139.2
Total Weight Lost = 13.8 lbs.
Money Raised = 759!
 .
Huzzah!  I managed to lose weight this week despite going to BOTH the MN State Fair and the Renaissance Festival.  Those that know the seriously delicious food culture surrounding these events will be very proud of me.  The picture to the right is Dan and I in one of the Farmer's Buildings, posing as turkeys.

If you've never been to a State Fair, it's all about fried food, food on sticks, fried food on sticks, etc.  We made a commitment to ourselves that we would only eat what we really wanted (1 savory & 1 sweet each), but we'd limit the portions and split things as we could.  That strategy, combined with 4 solid hours of non-stop walking, helped greatly to neutralize the fatty-impact of our consumption.
.
Above / to the left is Dan, holding one of his all-time Fair food favorites: the corn dog.  He loves 'em.  Just look at that enthusiastic thumbs up!  As you can see, however, this is no ordinary corn dog.  It's a MEGA corn dog.  I'd say 1.5 feet long, easy.  The funny part?  Dan picked the smallest one they had for sale.
.
Here's one of our favorite MN Fair traditions: the butter carving.  Yep, BUTTER.  There's a pageant of sorts that crowns a bunch of teenage girls "Little Miss Dairy," or something similar.  One of their prizes is to be carved in butter by a butter sculptor.  The slightly-blurry photo is of one of the finished butter-busts, with the artist in the background.  They carve in an elevated, refrigerated room that rotates, while their pretty little pageant winners smile and shiver.  Crown, poofy hair, winter coat.  It's quite a sight.
.
Below, I'm posing with a new-found treat.  This thing, called a "Fudge Puppy," is a sliver of Belgian waffle (on a stick, of course) dipped in chocolate, and served with whipped cream and sprinkles.  The waffle was still warm.  Yum!  It wasn't a deep fried candy bar, but I really enjoyed it.
.

The Fair has many other tasty treats that are not pictured here.  Some notable highlights include: the "Mouth Trap's" fried cheese curds, the Australian battered potatoes (best served with a nacho cheese sauce), "Cheese on a Stick" (it's like a corn dog, only with jalapeno-cheese inside), roasted sweet corn, cinnamon-sugar elephant ears, funnel cakes, "Swedish Egg Coffee" (we don't know what it is, either), Lingonberry iced cream, fried SPAM curds (...yikes...), deep-fried candy bars, deep-fried fruit, and just about anything else you can think of... deep-fried and on a stick.
.
.
Don't worry, though!  There are plenty of ways to get exercise at the Fair.  There's walking... which you do lots of.  But there's also rides to scream out your calories, concerts to dance away the pounds, and games to raise your heart rate!  The arcade games are our particular favorite.  Here's Dan,  looking fierce, as we battle for Skee-Ball superiority.
 .
Author's Note:  He kicked my ass at Skee-Ball, but I dominated at Big Buck Hunter.  DOMINATED.
.

So, that's how we spent last Sunday!  It was a lovely, breezy, greasy-food-filled, and tiring day... but it's an annual tradition that we love.  The following day, we experienced another annual tradition: the MN Ren Fest!  This event too has lots of fried food and food on sticks, but we try to focus on the important things: turkey legs, mead, and trying very hard not to stare at all the exposed cleavage.  We didn't take too many pictures, so you'll have to settle for this one.  Dan and I, in a quick self-shot picture in front of one of the Ren Fest shops.  You can just see the rose in the center, which I bought for Dan.  You know, just to shake up the rose-seller's preconceived notions of romance.
That's it for this week!
And next week... is the last week.
Dun Dun DUN!
See you then!

Current Weight = 141.0
Total Weight Lost = 12 lbs.
Money Raised = 660!
 .
Not much of a loss this week, sadly.  But, given the challenges of travel, I'll take it!
.
Here's a photo of Dan at the Pearl Bakery in downtown Portland.  We've been wanting to go there for years.  Gotta love that fresh made, real-deal, artisan stuff.  You can see some of the bread on display in the background.  Delish!
_______________________________________________________
.
So, as the title tells you... we're back home in the Twin Cities.  And, despite the last random bit of late summer heat and humidity, we're happy to be here.  It's nice to be surrounded by loving (if sometimes too loving) pets, sleeping in the comfort your own bed, with your trusty food scale close at hand, and a well-stocked pantry populated by the usual semi-healthy, go-to foods you already know and love.  Or... tolerate, at least.
While in Portland, I'd say we did a relatively good job of eating meals in and watching our portion size, save for one delicious dining-out special occasion (Screen Door, how I adore you....). So, though I didn't lose much weight, I enjoyed my vacation.  And that's worth something.
The relatively unflattering picture above is of me enjoying a spicy Chai Tea Latte (made with skim milk, of course) at the Powell's Coffee shop.  If you've never been, Powell's City of Books is the GREATEST FLIPPING PLACE ON EARTH.  It's a book store, four and five stories at places, that takes up an entire city block.  You literally need a map to get around, which they provide at any of the entrances.  It's amazing, especially for a bookworm like me.  If you like to read, it's worth the trip.  I promise.

But I digress.  This blog is about getting skinny for kitties, right?  It's about my endeavor to starve myself on behalf of homeless animals, yes?  Yes!  On the left you see Puck, ever the strict disciplinarian, who has reminded me with his cold kitty gaze that I must stay on task.
.
So!  Here are the goals I'm setting for this week:
1.)  Get back into the full swing of the diet!  Calorie counting, engage!
2.)  Begin an exercise regimen!  Something light, but sustainable.
3.)  Finish reading "A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2)" by George R. R. Martin, and start reading the next book.  It's not diet related, but it's just so darn good
 .
And, last but not least, I offer this video (which is not of my own creation) as... well, motivation.  It's a spoof e-dating video that's been "songified," as in... adjusted with an auto-tuner to make it a song.  And it's pretty darn catchy, if I say so myself!  Enjoy!

 The Weekly Update:
.
This week, there is no weekly update.
There are too many factors in play to measure accurately.  (Not to mention my fancy, automatic, weight-to-money spreadsheet is back in Minnesota.)
.
In case you were wondering, here's one of the reasons for our Portland visit.  Our new nephew and godson... Oliver "Ollie" Benjamin!  I'd link up a better picture, but we've been holding him and playing with him more than we've been snapping photos.  Probably for the best, right?  Anyway.  He's adorable.
.
So!  The "Skinny for Kitties" Challenge continues!  And, despite the struggles of eating while traveling, it's been a decent dietary week.  I won't bore you with the mundane details of how I ate less delicious pizza than I wanted to, but I will share a lovely little slice of Portland with you.  (Get it?  "Slice?"  It's a pizza pun.  Yeah... Sorry, I... uh, I'm drunk on vacation.)
.
Dan and I visited the "Classical Chinese Garden" in downtown Portland today.  It's just off of (duh!) the Chinatown and Pearl districts.  Above, you see Dan at the entrance gate.

To the right, you can see a general shot from one of the pavilion porches into a main open space.  There's a beautiful, lily and lotus covered pond that's filled with many (if only small) koi and goldfish.
.
The larger building in the background is the Garden's Teahouse.  It's a gorgeous structure with a functioning teahouse and small-meal restaurant.  After wandering in, Dan and I ordered a flight of three Oolong teas, which were served in a traditional Chinese ceremony fashion.
.
Our waitress explained the teas, their flavor, the proper brewing process, and walked us through the necessary steps.  She even politely refrained from laughing as we over-steeped, spilled, and made general fools of ourselves.
 .
Here I am, doing my best not to screw up the tea.  Please note the fine tea-holding form and well extended pinky finger.
 .
Honestly, though... we didn't do all that bad.  The tea was very tasty (and basically calorie free!).  Our favorite was the "Strong Fire Oolong" from Taiwan, which had a very dark, rich, and smoky flavor.  The ambiance of the teahouse was incredible, too.  It came complete with a sunny, garden view and a Chinese musician.

.
Here's another photo of the Garden grounds.  The pavilion shown was one of the art houses (I believe), that displayed a number of beautiful paintings and embroidered silks.
.
You can also see just a touch of a downtown skyscraper in the background.  It's funny, really.  To be in such a peaceful, quiet, serene and tranquil environment... and yet, you're still in the heart of an urban city.  Gotta love gardens, huh?
.
All in all, a wonderful afternoon!  We highly recommend the Classical Chinese Gardens (also known as the Lan Su Gardens) to anyone who is Portland-bound.
.

See?  See that?  It's hard to tell, but believe me....  That's the "Dan-and-Whit Seal of Approval," right there.
.
That's it for this week!  No real "skinny" or "kitties" to report, but next week... it'll be back to business!  I promise photos of cats, photos of food, and maybe even... (gasp)... a video.
.
See you then!

Current $/lbs = $53
Current Weight = 141.3
Total Weight Lost = 11.7 lbs.
Money Raised = $620!
 .
Puck would celebrate my progress, having successfully reached the halfway point for "Skinny for Kitties," only he hates my friggin' guts for making him wear this hat.  That's alright.
 .
That's what cats are for, right?
Lovable torment.
.
Well, readers... today marks the end of Week Four.  That means I'm exactly halfway done with my dieting-for-the-sake-of-kitties-marathon.  My goal was to lose 20 lbs throughout this experience, and I'm currently outpacing that by just a shade.  Yessss!  But, the bad news (and the great news, actually) is that I'll be going to Portland, OR this week.  Noooo!  I mean, YESSSSS!
Naturally, I'm thrilled about a vacation.  I love Portland, I love my sister-in-law and her hubby (who we'll be staying with), and I'm super excited to meet my new little nephew.  But eating out, or even away from our all-too-familiar food scale and "go-to" healthy food options, can make dieting difficult.  My plan is to walk a lot and very carefully monitor my portion sizes.  I will, of course, enjoy myself... and I may even have a Voo-Doo Donut, but I refuse to fall of the wagon at this stage in the game.
Here's a pic of Portland, with Mt. Hood in the background.  Seriously, if you've never been... it's awesome.  Great restaurants, vibrant art community, beautiful gardens, the best book store EVER, a wonderful Farmer's Market, gorgeous (though rainy) weather, and friendly people.  True, there's a lot of homeless, begging people.  But, you know, every city has some problems, right?  And the Voo-Doo donuts and Thai food on every corner make up for it.
Anyway!  My success this week can really be attributed to all the previously discussed factors (read the other blog posts, if you haven't) plus one addition......
 .
Dr. Pepper, How I Love Thee...
A very large amount of Diet Dr. Pepper consumption.  Yes, I know... I know.  Soda is bad for me.  I know that.  But me and DP go way back, okay?  We're long time buddies.  And if it's the difference between me  reaching for a sweet, cold ice cream treat... and a sweet, ice-cold, calorie-free Dr. Pepper... the DP should win.  It kills my sweet-tooth craving, gives me a bit of caffeine (which dulls my hunger and provides a boost of energy), and... well, I just love the stuff.  Combine that with Trader Joe's "Reduced Fat Cheese Puffs" and a video game, and suddenly I'm back in High School.  AND I'm not breaking the diet.  Win win!
.
 .
Before & After, in Progress!
I think it's only fitting to post a "Before & After" shot, being that we're halfway through with this whole experience.  That way, you can see the progress for yourself and know that I'm not lying or anything.  But, really.  I'm not lying.  I mean, why would I lie?  Even if it was for charity.  Really!  REALLY!  Okay, fine.  Here, see for yourself:
.
BEFORE:
This is a picture of me from almost a year ago (and from our last trip to Portland, in fact).  My total weight-lost journey has lasted about three years so far.  So, in this shot, I've lost some weight already.  But, we'll use it as a relatively accurate body shot of me before the "Skinny for Kitties" extravaganza.  Here, I'm wearing a large T-shirt and size 16 jeans (that are a bit too big for me).  I'm also yelling, "I love the ocean!"
.
.
AFTER (Halfway):
This picture was taken today, just outside our apartment in St. Paul.  Here, I'm wearing a medium T-shirt and a size 12 jeans, which are... *gasp* a little bit big on me.  My husband and I went shopping this week (even though I committed to not buying any new clothes until this event is over, regardless of how saggy or frumpy I'll look) just to see where I stand in terms of sizing.  The size 10 jeans I tried on were just a touch too tight for my comfort level, but they fit.  I was shocked.  And thrilled!  I haven't seen a size 10 on me for almost... well, 10 years.  Kind of fitting, no?
.
Also, that's a new haircut.  I probably lost a pound of hair... but, hey!  A pound is a pound, right?

Week 3: Onward we go!

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

  The Weekly Update:
Current $/lbs = $53!
Current Weight = 143.9
Total Weight Lost = 9.1 lbs.
Money Raised = $482!
Another 2.9 pounds lost this week!  I'm a mere sneeze away from passing the 10-lbs-gone mark!  Huzzah!

Pictured here is Puck, the strictest of my diet managers.  He approves of my progress, though he also demands that I feed him more.  And more.
What a lovable hypocrite.

Anyway.  This week was much more stable than last, but still full of little challenges.  I had to modify my portion size yet again, as well as overcome a rigid, several day plateau on the scale.  Now, you should know: For the sake of data-keeping, I weigh myself every day.  But I do NOT recommend this for the average weight-loser.  Your weight goes up and down a little bit every day (up to as much as 2 lbs) due to many factors, like water-retention, salt consumption, last time of eating, muscle swelling, different clothes, different time of day, etc.  And there's not a direct, daily relationship between "eat less one day, weight less the next."  It's more like "eat a little less all week, weigh less on Sunday."  But because I'm doing this for charity (and keeping close tabs on the fund-raising side of things), I weigh once a day.

That's where the plateau and portions come in.  Mid-week, I found myself stuck at the 144.5 threshold.  No matter what I did or how I ate, I couldn't seem to shift below that number.  Unfortunately, I tried to combat this by heavily reducing my calorie intake in the morning and allowing for more in the evening.  This was a bad idea.  After a couple days, I was so weak in the afternoons that I could barely pay attention.  So, I adjusted my portion size to be heavier at breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack, and lighter at dinner.  That helped tremendously with my energy problem, as well as finally dropping me into the 143's (if only barely)!  So, that's one reason for success, I'd say.  Here are a few other factors I credit for the loss:

Chipotle!
That's right.  Chipotle.  Why do I give it credit for some of my weight loss this week?  Because when Dan and I really, REALLY don't feel like cooking, we can walk to our neighborhood Chipotle.  There, we can get decent Mexicanesque food at a relatively low cost. It's tasty, very filling, and easy to manage caloricly.  Really!

The image above is not from Chipotle's main website, but from a nutrition site called "ChipotleFan.com."  You can click the boxes (as I've done), put in what you've ordered, and get the calorie count for your meal.  Now, this is not an exact science... as the food-servers don't dish out an identical portion size every single time, but still.  This kind of tracking is light-years better than what you can get at most restaurants, where the calories are secret and the portions are temptingly huge.  Which brings me to the second factor of the week....

Have your husband cook for you!
Yep, that's right.  I married an awesome cook.  And, as he's trying to get into shape too, he's wonderfully sensitive to my caloric limitations.  We've tried to reduce our trips out for meals as much as possible (even though we LOVE it) because it's just too hard to stay on task and within range.  But, when you have a chef like this at home, who needs to go out?

Here are photos of this week's dining highlights:

Here, (to the right) Dan is plating some Italian-herb-roasted green beans to go along with our leftover meatloaf and an ear of steamed sweet corn, which we top with melted Smart Balance spread, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.  Yum!

(To the left) This was another of my favorites:  Garlic-lemon green beans, oven roasted potatoes, and baked honey-dill salmon.

Ridiculously tasty!

(To the right)  This, I'm very proud of.  After the meal above, we took the leftover salmon and flaked the fish into the remaining honey-dill-light mayo sauce.  Then we refrigerated it for a couple days.  When we were ready for more salmonly goodness, I made a pot of sushi rice (rice that's pre-washed very well, then mixed with a dressing before cooling to room temperature) and we made "Leftovers-Sushi!"  We skipped the nori (seaweed) and added a few fresh chives for flavor and texture.  They're not very pretty, since this was my first foray into rice-on-the-outside rolls... and we didn't have the structural support that the sheets of nori provide... but they tasted amazing and we learned some tricks for the next time we try it.

This (to the left) is another of our vegetable-consuming achievements:  It's zucchini lasagna!  What's that, you say?  Well, it's lasagna with thin zucchini slices in place of the pasta.  It was really quite tasty and much more calorie friendly.

I've become a true zucchini convert.

And last, but not least:  The St. Paul Farmer's Market!
Like you've probably read in other posts, Dan and I go to the local Farmer's Market once a week.  It's really great.  We get a nice walk through downtown St. Paul, we stock up on all our fresh veggies for the week, and it's fun!  Here a peek:

The market can be crowded with families, especially on the nice-weather weekends.

Here's a shot of the brick walkway and wooden roofing structures that are found throughout.

Here is a family farm selling all kinds of beans, onion, and kohlrabi (which we've yet to try).

Here's a huge pile of basil and green onions.  It's $1 per bunch.  And the bunches are HUGE.  Compare that to those little dried plastic boxes you can get in the grocery store!

Here's Dan, buying eggplant.  We've not used it yet (and I've never eaten eggplant before), but we're planning on trying "Eggplant Parmesan" in the near future.  I mean, it's got parmesan in the title.  How bad could it be?

Here's the bi-color sweet corn vendor!  We've tried several varieties and vendors at this point, and I just love the way the bi-color looks.

Besides, this guy slipped us a free ear of corn.  So, I have to like him.

Here's a shot from one of the flower vendors, though we didn't buy any from this particular stand.  Instead, we bought a bundle of sunflowers.  To remind me of Kansas.

Here's a shot looking out toward the "entrance" of the Farmer's Market.  At least, it's the way we usually enter from.  I like that you can see the produce and the downtown buildings in a single frame.  A nice contrast.

And, for only $20, here's our haul!  From left to right, approximately:

-- Seven ears of sweet corn.
-- A bouquet of sunflowers.
-- A bunch of banana peppers.
-- Five red / purple onions.
-- A bundle of garlic-chives.
-- Three huge eggplant.
-- Six green & yellow zucchini.
-- A large bag of green beans.

And... a cat.  Apparently.

Who knew you could pick those up at the Farmer's Market?

The Weekly Update:
Current $/lbs = $45!
Current Weight = 146.7
Total Weight Lost = 6.3 lbs.
Money Raised = $283!
2.9 pounds lost this week!  Given the circumstances, I consider that a huge success!  Here's a photo of Rags, giving me a congratulatory kitty-five.  Or he's punching me.  It's hard to tell.
This week, there was a lot on my plate.  More figuratively than literally.  Work was crazy hectic (which means less time to pack meals and eat appropriately), Dan and I went on a road trip to help a friend move (which means fast food and dining out), and I was working very hard to complete a last-minute writing commission (which means I'm almost entirely sedentary in my free time).  That's was tough combination for me to overcome.  But, I attribute this week's success to the following factors:

Moving SUCKS.
Last Sunday marked the day that our dear friend Chad returned to the states for good, having lived in Germany for the last three years.  This picture, from left to right, shows Brenda (Chad's gorgeous and talented wife, another good friend), Chad, and Dan.  It was taken on our last night of Dan's and my vacation in Frankfurt.  Oh, how the apfelwein flowed.  Good memories!  So, on Sunday, Chad landed in the MSP airport.  A little tired, a little jet-lagged, but feeling pretty good.  We picked him up and drove him down to Iowa, where he's going to law school in a few weeks.
"What does this have to do with weight loss?" you may wonder.  Well, on Monday... we helped him load up a van with two heavy, wooden dressers, their drawers, a chair, and other apartment accouterments.  Then we carried them up several flights of stairs.  Did I mention it was 100 degrees?  So, yeah.  That was our workout for the day.  It wasn't all that much in terms of lifting, but the heat and humidity made it a veritable sweat-fest.  And I think I did pretty well watching my portion size... even when we went to a Chinese buffet.  Quite the challenge!

Beat the Food-Doldrums with VARIETY!
Another challenge this week was the slow creeping up of the "diet-food-depression."  That's when you find yourself thinking things like, "I can't ever eat anything tasty..."  "This food is SO boring," or, "Can't I just put butter on it...?"  These thoughts can be a diet-killer for me.  But, luckily, I married an amazing cook!
<--- This dinner features made-from-scratch mushroom-thyme risotto (using our own grown herbs!), stuffed and roasted gypsy peppers, and fresh, made-by-Dan's-own-hand semolina bread.

(Shameless plug:  If you are interested in bread or home-baking, check out my husband's awesome blog at baritonebread.blogspot.com.)

Needless to say, it was delicious.

The photo on the right is of the aforementioned "Zucchini Crab Cakes" (from Week 1's post).  Cakes on the left, Tabasco in the middle, and Trader Joe's tomato-red pepper soup on the right.  I must say, I was very skeptical of the recipe, as I have absolutely no love in my heart for zucchini.  But, after tasting these... I am a changed woman.  They were awesome.  Really awesome.  Like, stupidly good.  I highly recommend them to vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

My lunches are much less interesting, but they do well with helping me to manage my calorie counts.  These include:  1.) Steamed mixed veggies with a little nacho cheese dipping sauce (because that makes everything better), and 2.) Light tuna mixed with a tablespoon of Dan's super-tasty Dill Dip (light mayo, light sour cream, fresh dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and magic) and served with Better Cheddars.

Well, that's my week!  My deepest thanks go out to all those who are supporting me in this charity-weight-loss effort.  It's been wonderful motivation for me.
Please, continue to spread the word!  I need at least $5 more per pound to meet my goal.  Email any donation pledges to skinnyforkitties@gmail.com or in the comments below.
Thanks again!  See you next week!

Week 1: Tracking, Weighing, and Veggies!

If you're new to the site, please check out my first post "The Plan," which explains the blog.
And consider pledging a donation!  The more, the merrier!

The Weekly Update:
Current $/lbs = $44!
Current Weight = 149.6
Weight Lost = 3.4 lbs.
Money Raised = $150!

I lost some weight this week!  Yahooooo!

It's probably based on my diet,
which is so high in kitty.  --->

Really, though, for those interested in following along (or dieting too!), I attribute my success this week to the following factors:

"MyFitnessPal" really IS my fitness pal!
First, I got back on the "MyFitnessPal.com" bandwagon.  If you've never heard of it, it's a totally free online calorie counter.  It comes in website form (for us boring 'ole regular internet users) and in App form for iPhones, Android phones, Blackberry, iPad, etc.  It has a user-created database of THOUSANDS of food options, which allows you to search for chain-restaurant items, fast food items, coffee drinks... you name it!  (Note:  Since it's user-created, you occasionally have to be careful of the calorie postings.  If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.  Google it and check.)  You can also very easily put in your own calorie counts, as well as track your exercise!  My husband and I have found the calories earned from exercise to be a little high, however.  So, we tend to cut our time entered in half.  To give us an edge, let's say.  In addition, MyFitnessPal.com is a social experience.  There are friend's lists, forums, and online support groups a-plenty.  It's a great way to monitor what you eat.  And, for me, that's about 1200 calories a day.

Weigh EVERYTHING!
Second, I was careful to control my portion size through very exact, weight-based measurement.  Instead of taking the time to count out 21 individual "Better Cheddars," I weighed 30 grams worth.  It may seem picky, but you'd be amazed how much more you put on your plate if you just "eyeball" it.  Those calories can really add up!  So, if you're dieting, I STRONGLY suggest getting a digital food scale.  Coupled with calorie counting, it's a fantastic way to track everything you're eating, down to every last little gram.  It makes a difference, believe me!

Here's a photo of our food scale, which has served us quite well for over 3 years.  It can handle up to 11 lbs of load at a time (which we've never managed to do, even though we LOVE food) and we've only had to replace the battery once.

A very good investment!

Veggies, Veggies, VEGGIES!
Lastly, my husband and I ate a lot more veggies than usual.  We are self-described "Meat and Potatoes" people, with cheese on the side... and maybe some bread and butter.  And a beer.  But typically, we don't eat enough veggies.  So, we coupled my dieting challenge with another challenge:  As each vegetable comes into season at the Farmer's Market, we must buy (and eat) at least one of them.  Obviously, we can repeat the ones we enjoy, but we have to try as many as we can.  It's been surprisingly great, so far!  Not only are we supporting local farmers, but we're getting stupidly fresh produce and taking a nice weekend walk while we're at it.

Here's a list of all the veggies we bought at the Farmer's Market and what we made (or will make) with them:

Red Potatoes:  Oven-Roasted with herbs and a touch of Olive oil, as well as in Veggie Korma.

Cauliflower:  In Veggie Korma & Parmesean Roasted.

Green Beans (a lot):  Asian-Roasted (served with rice, see the picture to the right) & Italian seasoned.

Sweet Corn:  Microwaved and served with a little Smart Balance, Salt.  So good!

Sweet Onion:  In Veggie Korma, in Rice, in Meatloaf, with Potatoes, & anywhere else we could stick it.

Carrot:  Part of the "One-Pot Asian Rice" & Steamed.

Zucchinni:  Will be made into "Zucchini Crab-cakes" and Zucchini Lasagna later this week.  (Will be sure to report back on this next week, as I hate zucchini.)

Gypsy Peppers:  Will be stuffed with lean beef, rice, spices, and sauteed mushrooms.  Sounds tasty!

And there you have it!  Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who donated this week!  It's given me the strength to "Just say no!" to several delicious things, including a Culver's Custard Cake that was served at a work function.  Seriously.  Free ice cream cake.  It was hard.

Please spread the word!  And feel free to email any donation pledges to skinnyforkitties@gmail.com!  See you all next week!

The Plan.

That's me. The one with the ponytail.

In this picture (which was a promotional photo for an original play I was acting in, before you ask why I'm wearing a random smock and feeling up someone that isn't my husband), I weigh... well, I weigh a lot. And this isn't even me at my heaviest. I don't have many pictures from those days, because I was too ashamed to keep them. Those "blackout" days ate up several years of my life (bad pun). But, eventually, I grew sick of it. I dieted (first using WeightWatchers Online and later MyFitnessPal.com) and lost just under 50 pounds.

That's me, now. The one in the wedding dress.

This is me at my current size. And, while I'm certainly happy about how I look and I'm thrilled with all the progress I've made... I just can't stay motivated. You'd think, after years of dieting, that being only 25 pounds from your ultimate goal weight would be enough motivation. But, it's not.

So, that's where the story begins: Me, 153 lbs. Looking for motivation. A reason to stick with it, a reason to push past this plateau. And I found it.

I was cruising the web one day, bouncing from favorite to favorite, when I saw a post on the Facebook page for HELP Humane Society. They are having funding troubles. Serious troubles. Like, close their doors for good troubles.

For your reference, HELP Humane is the fabulous, no-kill shelter where I got these two beasties.

<---Puck.
He's about 5 years old.

Rags. --->
He's about 3 years old.

So, when I read this, I knew I had to do something. I decided to become a "Shelter Buddy," which I will be as of the end of next week. I'll be sending $10 a month as a direct deposit from my bank to HELP Humane's account, in order to help them cover their regularly monthly costs. But, I thought to myself, "That's just not enough." There has to be something, something else I can do to help this great program who helps so many others.

That's when I decided: I'm going to diet my butt off (maybe literally) in the name of charity.

Here's how it works:

-- I'm going back on the a diet, for serious.

-- I'm asking friends, family, and charitable strangers to pledge a dollar amount ($1, $5, $10!, etc), per each pound I lose.

-- I have nine weeks, spanning July 23rd through September 17th.

-- Immediately following the close of the nine week challenge, those pledging will send their checks directly to HELP Humane Society (Not to me! I won't make a cent!).

-- I'll fit better into my jeans, you'll get the warm-warm fuzzies, and a lot of cats and kitties will get the love and care they need. It's a win-win!

But, to do this, I need YOU!

Your pledges are what make this a reality. Anything at all is helpful, $1 a pound, $2 a pound, even ¢50 a pound! Please, help me to support this truly wonderful shelter! Pledge whatever you can in the comments below!

Thanks!
Whit
